Got a question for Natalie? Ask away.

Oh, c’mon. There’s gotta be something you’re dying to ask this lighting pro. Who were her biggest influences? How could she afford a New York apartment when she was first starting out? What does she consider her biggest success?

Natalie will post her answers as fast as she can, but don’t have kittens if it takes a while. Remember, this busy LD juggles at least three jobs.

Where are you from originally? Are you still tied to your roots in any way?

Denville, NJ My parents still live there. I have a lot of wonderful childhood memories of growing up there, though I don’t go back very often. I am, however, extremely close to my parents (we talk on the phone nearly every day and see each other very frequently).

What do you love about living in New York?

I love how quiet it can be in the middle of all the chaos, especially the week between Christmas and New Year’s. I love seeing the city appear out of the window of an airplane. I love running into people I know in the middle of a sea of anonymous faces. It is a great place to be a freelancer because there is so much to do and so many things to see. I am lucky enough to be traveling regularly, which prevents NY from getting boring.

How do your talents in other areas (photography, set design, etc.) help you in your work as an LD?

Photography is probably the most obviously helpful. Quite literally, a photograph is an object created entirely by light. Framing shots really makes me think about the whole composition, especially what is right at the edge of the frame. And the proportions of a 35mm slide are essentially the same as those of a proscenium. In a certain way I don’t think about set design as different than lighting. I’m interested in creating a literal and metaphorical space in which the play (or dance or opera) can live. Design for me is about creating an environment, not just focusing a light.
